The Brian Walsh Charity Water Polo Tournament 2019
On behalf of Blackpool Aquatics, I would like to thank everybody who made this year’s Brian Walsh Charity Water Polo Tournament possible. Well done to the five teams that took part in our event, which took place on Saturday April 27th 2019 at Palatine Leisure Centre. Blackpool, Bury, Fleetwood, Lancaster and Radcliffe all competed well for the title, with many exciting close fought games taking place.
After the league stage Lancaster topped the table with a perfect record of wins. Fleetwood were placed second only succumbing to Lancaster in the opening phase. Bury had a mixed bag of results, despite being low on player numbers, they won two of their games loosing the other two matches, finishing third in the league table. Blackpool and Radcliffe fought it out for fourth and fifth place and were equally matched, even drawing their head to head game; in the end only goal difference separated the teams with Blackpool edging out Radcliffe. This set up an exciting final between Fleetwood and Lancaster, at half time Lancaster were edging the game 5-3, but Lancaster showed their class in the second half extending their lead to a 9-5 win. Congratulations to Lancaster this year’s champions, well done to Fleetwood for their first ever appearance in the final and thank you and well played to everyone involved!
We would also like to extend thanks to everybody who contributed towards the organisation and running of this event; including to everyone who attended, those who donated raffle prizes, and those who generously gave their money to this great cause. A thank you goes to the business who donated prizes, the Light Craft Club who sponsored our event. Thanks are also extended to Blackpool Council and the staff, who kindly allowed us the use of the Palatine Pool, without which the tournament could not take place. It would be remiss not to mention all the helpers, officials and referees involved on the day and in the build up to the event and thank them for their time and efforts.
The charity for 2019 event was raising money for Prostate Cancer UK’s, who’s aim is to ensure that all men facing prostate cancer and prostate disease get the best possible information, the best possible care and the best possible help in dealing with the effects of diagnosis. Their ultimate aim is to find better methods of diagnosis and better treatments (without side effects). The sum total raised so far is £1,074.92 (plus gift aid), which is a great achievement; this is the most we have ever managed to raise with just five teams.
Once again thank you and we look forward to the 2020 event in which we hope to raise even more money for another good cause.
A great big thank you goes out to everyone who was involved!
